Why do we need two factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication is an important security feature; it is incredibly effective at preventing anyone else from accessing your account without authorization. When you enable it, you add an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a one-time security code generated by an app or sent to you via SMS to be submitted each time you log in.
How do I set up two factor authentication?
To enable two-factor authentication, you must be signed in on a desktop (not mobile). Follow these steps when signed in on a desktop:
- Go to your user account settings once logged in.
- Scroll down to the section titled "Two-factor Authentication." You will have the option of having the codes sent by SMS or generated by an authentication app such as 1Password or Google Authenticator. Follow the instructions to complete the enrolment process.

Can everyone in the gallery share a two factor authentication code?
We encourage each separate user to have their own email login, and then their own two factor authentication. This is primarily for security reasons, but is also helpful for galleries with multiple locations. If you are all sharing the same login, please add more users to your CMS account. Adding more users is a free service we’re happy to provide. To add more users to your account, kindly follow these steps, Adding a New User to Artsy CMS.

What is a recovery code?
When you set up two factor authentication you are provided with some recovery codes. We very strongly recommend that you set up your recovery codes and store them somewhere safe. Each code is one-time use and they enable you to regain access to your account even if you lose access to the phone number authentication codes are sent to, or the app they are generated on.
